Road Salt Summit

At the Salt Summit in Lake George on Thursday, October 14th, AdkAction’s Executive Director Brittany Christenson announced the new Clean Water, Safe Roads Partnership set to launch this winter. The Partnership is a three-phase education and outreach program designed to advance a regional strategy for salt reduction to help protect drinking water and Adirondack lakes and streams. Phase One will focus on municipal salt reduction. Subsequent phases of the education and outreach program will be targeted at commercial applicators and the driving public, respectively.

The program will support education and outreach to 17 Champlain Basin municipalities in New York State who have already signed on to the program’s Pledge to Reduce Road Salt and seeks to attract ten additional municipalities to sign on. Participating municipalities will receive targeted water quality reports and technical assistance to develop personalized road salt reduction action plans. They will also gain access to professional training, peer support, and a robust resource library.

The goal of Phase One is to support the efforts of municipalities to implement proven winter road maintenance best practices as they work to reduce the application of road salt. This work builds on years of regional achievements to reduce the use of road salt and replicates similar successful efforts in Lake George and Lake Placid for implementation across the basin.

Municipalities interested in joining the partnership are encouraged to contact Brittany Christenson at [email protected]
