In a North Country Food Desert, a “Farmacy” Fills the Void

The lack of a grocery store is an occurrence that is far too common for towns within the Adirondack Park. This lack becomes more apparent in contrast to the farming renaissance that is taking place in the eastern Adirondacks and Champlain Valley area, with an abundance of new farms offering organic produce, meats and other products. The town of Keeseville illustrates this contrast, with a closed grocery store, but three organic farms on the outskirts of town. AdkAction decided to move for change, working with local store owner Dan Bosley, of the Keeseville Pharmacy to open a farm store, called the “Farmacy” within the Pharmacy. The shelves are stocked with local produce, meats and other dry goods, and offers an alternative to convenience stores or long drives to other grocery stores.
