"Spread the Word, Not the Virus"

AdkAction is accepting submissions for a COVID-19 Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest focusing on the theme “Spread the word, Not the virus”.

All New York State middle and high school students are eligible to enter. The winner will receive a $1,000 prize and have their PSA showcased on television and at the Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival on Friday, June 4th, 2021. Each PSA should be 30-45 seconds in length, include the slogan “spread the word, not the virus”, contain logos as specified in the directions, and address a wide range of audiences. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Friday, January 15th, 2021 and participation is free.

Students will upload video submissions online through Launchpad, a digital film contest platform donated by Skills21 at EdAdvance, an Educational Nonprofit based in Connecticut. Submissions will be judged by teachers, nonprofit leaders, and health department staff and based on a scoring rubric. Judges will be looking for PSA’s that show considerable originality and inventiveness, with compelling messaging that evokes emotion. The full scoring rubric is located below. 

Messaging should be derived from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, specifically, their web page titled, “How to Protect Yourself & Others.”

Covid-19 PSA Contest Scoring


You will be graded on a scale of 1-5 under each category 

with the notion that the below expectations are a level 5. 

(Outstanding-5, Professional-4, Good-3, Basic-2, Unsatisfactory-1) 





Shots are in focus and well framed. Shots are well composed, interesting and shot from a variety of perspectives and angles. Camera is not shaky. 


Lighting supports mood, flatters subject(s) or focuses attention to objects.


Talent is/are chosen to successfully convey a message.


Props and wardrobe are creative and enhance the message.

Green Screen

Use of greenscreen enhances PSA’s quality (if used). 

Post Production and Editing



Music (if needed)

Musical score complements and enhances message. Sound levels do not detract from other sounds. 

Narration (if needed)

Narration voice matches the message with pacing and tone. Voice is clear, effective and well projected.


All clips are just long enough to make the point clear with no slack time.

Content and Audience




Viewer is immediately engaged with a strong opening and interest was maintained throughout the PSA.


PSA conveys a compelling message that evokes emotion.


The audience learns something about the topic that they didn’t know before. 


PSA shows considerable originality and inventiveness. The content and ideas are presented in a unique and interesting way.
