The problem: Many Adirondack communities have lost businesses, residents, quality housing, and a sense of downtown vibrancy.
How we’re taking action: Through events like our Keeseville Community Arts Festival and community development projects focused on rural grocery access, community gardens, and arts-based Main Street development, we are helping our downtowns remain welcoming, vibrant, and functional service centers.
AdkAction’s volunteer-driven arts festival strengthens the sense of place in Keeseville, fostering pride and investment in the community’s cultural and economic vitality. What began as a small plein air painting festival evolved into a full-fledged community-wide celebration of the arts. The Keeseville Community Arts Festival continues to be an indispensable summer arts event in the hamlet, averaging over 500 visitors over two days in July.
The Farmacy Project works to make local and fresh food easier to find, buy, and eat by creating grocery areas in existing storefronts like the Keeseville Pharmacy. The resulting ‘Farmacy’ serves as a model for bringing healthy local food to rural communities, and has been replicated at the Mountain Weavers Farm Store in Port Henry, and Cornerstone Drug in Rouses Point.
The Keeseville Community Garden is a project created by AdkAction’s 2021 Tom Boothe Adirondack Intern Kim Gonzales, who sourced all of the initial materials, land, and interest and constructed the garden beds. The garden is a community-cultivated space that functions not only as gardening space for residents of nearby apartments, but also hosts community events.
AdkAction is also the fiscal sponsor of the Webb Community Garden in Old Forge.
