Plant Sale

AdkAction’s Adirondack Pollinator Project is delighted to offer its 5th Annual Pollinator-Friendly Native Plant Sale. Whether you plant a few plants or many, you will help rebuild the monarch butterfly population, attract hummingbirds, and strengthen native bee and moth populations.

This year we have carefully chosen 10 varieties of native flowering plants to benefit pollinators that live in the Adirondacks. We are growing the plants at the Uihlein Farm Greenhouse in Lake Placid, and you will be able to pick them up directly from the greenhouse! All plants will be ready to plant directly in your garden and are ready to thrive during their first season. Each plant has been carefully sourced or grown from seed to ensure that they have never come in contact with neonicotinoids (a class of insecticides that are harmful to pollinators).

*Please note: all plants available through this sale are grown naturally and are not treated with pesticides. As a result, they may have some insect damage, which is expected since these plants are safe for pollinators. Depending on growing conditions, we reserve the right to substitute similar plants or offer a refund at the time of pick-up to account for losses or other unforeseen issues. *

All proceeds will support the Adirondack Pollinator Project, a project of AdkAction in partnership with The Wild Center, and Paul Smith’s College.

Product Details

Asclepias incarnata 'Ice Ballet'

This Swamp Milkweed brightens up the mid-summer garden with vanilla scented, pillowy clusters of snow-white flowers. These sit atop an elegant upright, branching stem with smooth willow-like foliage. Its height varies widely depending on soil moisture, soil nutrients and light conditions.

Swamp milkweed is very popular with pollinating insects, attracting a diverse and ample array of butterfly, skipper, fly, wasp and bee species. Even hummingbirds are occasional visitors to its flowers! Its foliage is an important food source not only for the Monarch butterfly but also for the Swamp Milkweed Leaf Beetle and Large Milkweed Bug.

This easy-care milkweed prefers consistently moist soil, but also performs admirably in average, well-drained gardens. Full sun is best and some shade is tolerated.
