Keeseville Grocery Opens in Former Dollar Store

For the first time in over a decade, residents of Keeseville have a local, fully stocked grocery store to call their own. The recent opening of Keeseville Grocery & Deli is a significant milestone, marking the return of fresh food access to an area that has long lacked a central market. The store, opened by the Sikandar family of Keeseville, offers a wide range of groceries, fresh produce, and deli options, and it’s quickly becoming a hub for residents.

This opening bucks a troubling trend in the Adirondacks and across rural America, where grocery stores have been closing at an alarming rate, leaving behind rural food deserts—areas where fresh, healthy, and affordable food is hard to come by. For many communities, this means traveling long distances for groceries, increasing financial and time burdens. Keeseville Grocery’s opening is a hopeful sign of revitalization, showing what’s possible when community-focused entrepreneurs invest in local solutions.

AdkAction has long been aware of the critical need for fresh food in Keeseville. Since the closure of the hamlet’s last grocery store in 2013, we have worked to bridge the gap through efforts like our Farmacy Project, which connects local farmers with rural residents by helping existing storefronts operate micro-grocery spaces. This program provides access to healthy food while strengthening connections between consumers and local agriculture. The return of a full-service grocery store is a welcome development, complementing efforts like the Farmacy Project as well as nearby farm stores at North Country Creamery and Mace Chasm Farm, and enhancing year-round access to fresh food.

The new Keeseville Grocery is a step forward for food security, local economy, and community well-being. By listening to customer feedback and exploring partnerships with local farms, the store is poised to become a lasting part of the region’s food system.

AdkAction congratulates the Sikandar family on this successful endeavor and celebrates the positive impact it will have on Keeseville and surrounding towns. We look forward to continuing our work to ensure that all Adirondack communities have access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food.
