Position Description

AdkAction, celebrating its 10th Anniversary this past year, is seeking a new Executive Director. The Executive Director serves as the foundational leader of AdkAction and as a visible spokesperson for the organization in the Adirondacks region. This exciting senior leadership position is instrumental in setting the future vision and furthering the successes and impacts of the key projects of AdkAction. Our major projects are reducing food insecurity, securing accessible broadband, reducing road salt, protecting pollinator habitats, promoting the arts, and increasing the supply of low-cost housing. The Executive Director position will make significant, transformative contributions to the people and environment of the Adirondacks, foster great connections throughout the Adirondacks, and collaborate with passionate, highly-committed board members, staff, volunteers, AdkAction members, and other non-profit leaders in the region.

The Executive Director is responsible for securing funding to advance the goals of the organization and its portfolio of projects, managing staff, creating a positive work environment, and fostering an organizational culture that emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and inclusion. This position is in charge of managing an $600,000 annual budget, providing strategic direction, managing a 3-person staff (plus interns), and overseeing the communications of the organization to over 600 members, community leaders, and the general public. The role also includes strategic planning, administration, grant writing, fundraising, technology operations, and maintaining increasingly diverse revenue streams. The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial, a problem solver, strategic thinker, motivator and innovator, and an empowering leader with a passion for solving needs within and promoting the vibrancy of the Adirondacks and its communities. The Executive Director prepares and runs bi-monthly Board meetings, and is responsible for keeping the Board of Directors informed and engaged. The Executive Director. reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors. The successful candidate will have to live full-time in the Adirondacks by the Spring of 2022 and be a US citizen or permanent resident.

AdkAction became a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2011, and remains true to its founding principle that a small number of passionate people can make a big difference. AdkAction is a nimble and responsive non-profit that can address unmet needs through a growing and diverse portfolio of member-supported projects. We get things done by focusing on projects with impact and collaborating as a close collective between staff and board. Each project is led by a Board member, is rooted in the Adirondacks, has measurable outcomes, broad community support, and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Executive Director Core Responsibilities 

Leadership and Management
  • Build, collaborate, and maintain a strong local and regional presence for AdkAction. 
  • Oversee ongoing project excellence and rigorous project evaluation. 
  • Actively engage AdkAction’s board members; partnering organizations; supporters; local, state and federal agencies, and other stakeholders. 
  • Cultivate, enhance, and support a strong Board of Directors. 
  • Amplify a culture which attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse, highly-qualified staff.
  • Manage the recruitment, training, and professional development of all staff. 
  • Ensure that each AdkAction project has an engaged member of the board assigned as its project leader.
  • Architect effective systems that track project progress and regularly evaluate impact reporting. 
Finance and Communication
  • Manage the full range of activities required to attract, retain, and engage AdkAction members and work to increase the number of dues-paying members and the average dollar amount of contributions.
  • Lead activities required to plan, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals.
  • Ensure consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, and communications.
  • Collaborate with project leaders to develop annual project revenues.
  • Work with the Finance Committee to develop the annual budget and monthly financials.
  • Develop, maintain, and ensure the implementation of sound financial practices.
  • Work with the Communications Coordinator to deepen and refine all aspects of communications.
  • Effectively communicate project impacts and successes to diverse constituencies.
Strategy and Planning
  • Work with the Board to create and lead the implementation of AdkAction’s new three-year strategic plan. 
  • Ensure that AdkAction’s projects align with regional priorities and opportunities, and that they address unmet needs in the region. 
  • Lead effective strategies to drive each project area toward achieving its goals. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant trends in the fields related to AdkAction project areas.
  • Be a guiding force that amplifies and strengthens the collaborative leadership of AdkAction throughout the Adirondacks and maintains positive relationships with funders, donors, and political and community leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of senior leadership experience 
  • Specific examples of having developed and executed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth 
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations, contributing to organizational diversity, inclusion and belonging efforts, and cultural competence 
  • Demonstrated excellence in management with the ability to coach and build thriving, highly collaborative teams, to set and achieve strategic objectives, and to manage a $600K budget 
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors 
  • Ability to inspire and engage with diverse volunteer and donor groups in a rural area 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Comfort with being a strong presence in the Adirondacks to build connections with other local organizations, elected officials, and community leaders through multimodal approaches 
  • Self-directed, action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative 
  • Grant writing knowledge, experience, and success in securing grants
  • Strong digital literacy skills and comfort with cloud-based applications, marketing technologies, CRMs, and donor tracking software 

Salary and Benefits

This position is a full-time exempt position – 100% FTE. The salary for this position will range from $85,000-$105,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This position offers a comprehensive benefit package, which includes: health insurance, retirement matching, technology stipend, community-supported agriculture (CSA) share reimbursement, and generous paid time off.

Position Type/Location/Travel

This full-time, exempt position, is based out of AdkAction’s office in Keeseville, NY. The selected candidate need not live in Keeseville, so long as he/she/they live in the Adirondack Park and are willing to commute to the office at least two days per week. Some local travel is required for meetings and conferences.

2022 Tom Boothe Adirondack Internship

This paid internship provides practical experience in nonprofit project development and implementation, and professional skills for future career success. A variety of recreational opportunities are also made available through the Tom Boothe Adirondack Internship, such as guided paddling/biking/hiking excursions, visits to cultural sites in the Adirondacks, meetings with local leaders, and tours of AdkAction project sites. Our internship is designed to allow the intern enough flexibility and time to truly experience and enjoy the immense beauty of the Adirondacks. Housing or a housing stipend are also provided.
