Key Issues

Property Assessments

Issues related to propert assessment reform were ranked tops by our members, with uniform agreement that the following sub-categories were the top priority issues.

  • Fair and consistent property assessments for all residents, both local and seasonal
  • Elimination of State-imposed and unfunded mandates
  • State land valuation equal to private land valuation

Assessors in the North Country face unique challenges:

  • The State owns large tracts of land in many towns.
  • There are often few sales in a town each year.
  • Quite often school districts include portions of multiple towns.
  • Finding qualified people to collect and verify inventory data/become assessors is difficult.
  • Revaluations, when conducted, are often on different cycles for towns in the same school districts, creating big swings in tax share between towns.

We believe that helping assessors in the North Country share best assessment practices and develop consistent solutions to the issues and challenges that they face is the best way to ensure that properties are assessed in a consistent manner in our sparsely populated and unique area.
